Neil & Sonora’s Pescadero Beach Surprise Proposal

Neil proposed to Sonora at Pescadero Beach, a place that already meant a lot to both of them. It’s near where Neil grew up, and it was also one of the places where they spent a lot of time together when they first started dating. There was already so much meaning built into the location before the proposal even happened.

What made the day even more memorable was the weather… and perhaps the associated anxiety! The forecast was bad from the start, and on my drive down it absolutely poured, at least by Bay Area standards. Although it made us both a little nervous, rescheduling wasn’t really an option since Sonora’s family was coming into town (as a surprise) and they were planning to celebrate together that evening. So Neil went for it anyway, and I’m soooo glad he did.

By the time they arrived, the sky had opened up in the most incredible way. It really felt like the weather had shifted just for them. Neil led Sonora up to the spot where we had placed a couple of bouquets in the sand, framing a perfect view, while we stayed hidden in the dunes nearby waiting for the moment to unfold. And when it did, it was beautiful.

What I loved most about their proposal and this set of photos was how much energy the two of them brought into it. They were so lively, playful, and fully themselves the entire time. From the moment Sonora realized what was happening, everything felt full of motion and personality — their personality. It felt like we were just watching the two of them experience one of the biggest moments of their lives exactly as they are.

Afterward, we wandered through the beach and dunes with them, and the whole session had such a fun, spontaneous feel to it. Between the dramatic skies, the soft sunlight, and the way Neil and Sonora lit up every frame, this proposal was an absolute delight to photograph. Congrats to Neil & Sonora!
